Healthy Smile Tips for Children…Little habits today. Strong smiles tomorrow

Cavities—also known as tooth decay—are the sneakiest little troublemakers in childhood. In fact, they’re the most common chronic disease of kids in the United States. More than half of children ages 6–8 have already had a cavity in a baby tooth, and by the teen years (12–19), more than half have had one in a permanent tooth. Yikes!

And cavities aren’t just tiny holes. When left untreated, they can cause pain, infections, and real-life problems with eating, speaking, playing, and even learning. Not exactly what we want for growing smiles.

Here’s the bright side: cavities are highly preventable.

  • Fluoride varnish can prevent about one-third of cavities in baby teeth.
  • Kids who drink fluoridated tap water tend to have fewer cavities.
  • Brushing daily with fluoride toothpaste makes a big difference.
  • Dental sealants on back teeth can prevent 80% of cavities—that’s superhero-level protection!

What Parents & Caregivers Can Do

For Babies:

  • Wipe gums twice a day (morning and before bed) with a soft, clean cloth.
  • Once teeth appear, brush twice daily with a soft toothbrush and plain water.
  • Schedule a dental visit by your baby’s first birthday.
  • Ask about fluoride varnish when that first tiny tooth pops in.

**For children under 2, check with your dentist or doctor before using fluoride toothpaste.

For Kids:

  • Brush twice a day with fluoride toothpaste.
  • Supervise brushing until they’ve mastered the skill (usually around age 6). Use a pea-sized amount and remind them to spit, not swallow.
  • Ask your dentist about dental sealants to protect those hard-to-reach back teeth.

A few simple habits today can mean fewer tears, fewer fillings, and a lifetime of healthier smiles. Prevention is powerful—and it starts at home! Great dental care doesn’t have to drain your wallet. A healthy, confident smile starts with simple daily habits — and small steps truly make a big difference!
